Black windows – a new trend in architecture

Table of contents

Black windows They storm into contemporary architecture. They are stylish, pretty, give the buildings character and by no means look gloomy. Especially if their profiles are made of thin aluminum.

Black windows replace gray, white, wooden

Black windows? Yes! This is the latest trend, which is gaining more and more supporters and there are many indications that in the twenties of the twenty-first century it will be one of the leading in modern construction. Fashions change. Also in architecture. For many decades, the dominant color of window joinery was white. This was the case with old wooden windows, as well as those made of PVC, which stormed the market in the nineties. At the turn of the century, another trend was clearly visible: wooden windows or pretend windows, i.e. various types of imitations made of PVC in the color of oak, beech and other species. The next stylistic turn was a bold introduction to the architecture of woodwork in various shades of gray – very often it was graphite or anthracite. It was a clear departure from the canons of “homely” and warm architecture, in favor of slightly cooler variations on modernism. It was also related to the increasingly common use of modern aluminum profiles (although in this case a large part of the market were imitations made of PVC). The last few months have brought a further tightening of this course – more and more often in the design of buildings no longer includes gray, but pure black.

What are black windows used for?

What are black windows used for? In which type of architecture do they work best? It is worth pointing out a few typical directions:

  • Modern barn – a hugely popular format of single-family housing, which is a combination of modern and traditional architecture, with a rustic pedigree.
  • Modernist house or block of flats, characterized by simple, minimalist forms
  • Post-industrial building, loft type – only a few colors can match red brick, and black is one of them
  • Office, commercial and public utility buildings – black has always been considered a noble color, so it is perfect to emphasize the prestige of the place.

Importantly, contrary to appearances and fears of some people, black windows do not make a dark impression. Everything is a matter of the appropriate composition of the building’s body, and from the inside – the arrangement of space. In combination with white, they remain a strong and expressive, but by no means heavy accent, giving the construction character. They also blend perfectly with warm wood, both on the façade and in the interior. The same applies to brick, especially aged brick.

A heavier, but great-looking combination is the combination of black windows with concrete or its imitation – this is a typical industrial style. Of course, it does not hurt to choose the option Pure Black

, where the entire building is maintained in black tones, including the façade and roof, and the effect of uniqueness and diversity is achieved through a skilful play with forms and textures.

What is the difference between black aluminum windows and PVC windows?

What connects the above-mentioned architectural forms, seemingly distant from each other? Most of them are characterized by very large glazing surfaces, sometimes even replacing facades. In this case, black windows can only be aluminium. This metal is extremely durable, and at the same time easy to form and flexible. Its properties make it possible to design and manufacture windows with a span of up to several meters, which is impossible in the case of PVC and wood. What else is the difference between black aluminum windows and competing solutions? First of all, metal profiles are thinner, which allows windows to give a lighter, more modern, more sophisticated character, and at the same time provides better illumination of rooms, while maintaining the most stringent parameters for energy efficiency. Secondly, black aluminum windows are easy to make – this material is powder coated in any color chosen by the investor from a wide range of colors.
